New Three Floyds Beer Brand Could Bring a Chicago Brewpub Closer

Is WarPigs, a new beer brand from Three Floyds, a precursor to the acclaimed brewer finally opening a brewpub in Chicago? News broke over the weekend that Three Floyds—the Munster, Ind. brewery known for mega-popular beers including Zombie Dust, Dark Lord, and Alpha King—is collaborating with the Danish brewery behind Mikkeller. They plan to launch a new beer brand, WarPigs, later this week in Chicago.

The Tribune has details about the new beer brand and its U.S. debut on Friday at Emporium Arcade Bar in Wicker Park. The three beers had been available in Copenhagen where there’s a WarPigs brewpub.

Within the Trib piece, a Three Floyds spokeswoman said there’s a chance a WarPigs brewpub could open in Chicago. That could coincide with the mysterious building at 819 N. California Ave. in Humboldt Park where Three Floyds’ founder Nick Floyd wants to open a restaurant/bar. He shared a little of his plans back in September, but has gone radio silent since then.

State beer production laws make it harder for Three Floyds to open additional facilities. The Indiana brewery is already at brewing capacity, as mandated by Hoosier State officials. A Three Floyds-branded brewpub, even across state lines, would put the brewer over capacity. However, WarPigs could give the Humboldt Park project new life, allowing them to get around the regulations. The new beer will be contract brewed by Great Central Brewing Co. in Chicago and Wisconsin Brewing Co. in Verona, Wis., according to the Trib.
